Goals & Areas of Focus

SELF-SUFFICIENCY PROGRAMS to be established for the area with periodic visits by veterinary, medical, dental, and textile experts.

CHILDREN’S HOME: Construction of a new building to begin in 2010 to accommodate 15 full time children and feed lunch to additional 30 children. The initial property has been purchased in Nuñoa.  We have recently purchased 2 adjacent lots to be used for animal and garden space for the facility and a perimeter wall is under construction.  Detailed architect plans are ready and the cost estimate is $50,000 for the construction.  Monthly expenses for food, staff, utilities, and other supplies are $1000.

VETERINARY SUPPORT FOR LOCAL FARMS  began in July 2009 at the Mamaniri Ranch.  The farm is home to 3 families with 13 members.  The current programs at the ranch include parasite control and advanced reproduction programs which started in August 2009.  Initiation of vaccination programs to prevent the 30 to 50% annual cria (baby alpaca) deaths due to enterotoxemia began in January 2010.

The economy in Nunoa depends largely on alpacas and alpaca products and it has been hurt badly by the global economic downturn.  Fleece prices are at an all time low.

MEDICAL AND DENTAL VISITS by US doctors who work directly with the community as well as with the local medical providers.

LOCAL PRODUCT EXPORT to the US is in progress, initiated by Nuñoa Project board member Karina Pomroy of Peruvian Link.

PROMOTING ALPACA & ECOTOURISM: Visits to town and local ranches to support the local economy. Attractions that can be reached by trail or road include hot springs, archaeological sites, trout fishing, bird watching, camping, rock climbing and horseback riding.
